Just right for the subway...
I purchased the Philips HN 110 Folding Noise-Canceling Headphones in February 2009 and have been using almost daily for my subway commute in NYC.
In my experience thus far, there are a few things that noise-canceling headphones will do and a few that they will not.
Cancels out the the rhythmic noise of a train very well?
YES.
Cancels out the shrill voice of the high school student on her cell phone about she thinks about Bobby and "omg, you think he likes me too!?!"?
NO.
My point here is this: Don't purchase noise-canceling headphones, any brand for that matter, expecting to completely isolate all outside noise.
But that being said, the Philips HN 110 Folding Noise-Canceling Headphones do a well enough job of reducing outside noise and makes it very handy to have in a noisy environment. This could also be due to the generous foam that surrounds your ears, which is surprisingly comfortable and snug, without the excess squeezing.
One gripe I do have about these headphones is this: The adjustable headband does not stay in a fixed position . Sure, you can move them up and down to comfortable position, just don't expect it to stay that way if you plan to move your head more than 3 degrees in any direction.
In brief, these headphones are just right for a public commute. Also, for the price point, you get a comfortable set of headphones without the added worry of "Crap! I dropped over a $100 on this. Hope its not stolen!" YMMV on that last one.
Fantastic value; Absolutely zero issues
There's one misconception about noise-cancelling technologies; They do NOT cancel out ALL noises. They cancel out continuous tones (as opposed to continuously varying, such as speech). I use these for my travelling and they work an absolute treat on the aircraft. I also use them when working at my desk, and they cancel out the hum of the laptop and printer fans. Unfortunately the kid's arguing still gets through :-)
They fold up and are stowed away very nicely in the bag supplied. Battery life (1x AAA) is great, lasting two 8 hr flights without an issue.
They certainly aren't Bose, but neither's the price. These have proven so worthwhile that two of my friends have also purchased a set each and they are very pleased.
Also, even without the noise cancellation circuitry on, the headphones still produce good sound like any other standard over-the-ear headphones, albiet not without any ambient noise.
The headphones do cover the ears and are very snug. Those of you with bigger than average ears and heads may find them a tight fit, but I'm by no means of small build and I find them fine.
What's your problem people
I decided to buy these even with the complaints people had. The reviews on the sound quality were good so that wasn't a concern. The comfort aspect was a concern since I have a bigger head and wear glasses.
So anyway I just came back from Spain and here is my opinion.
Sound quality is great, like stated in other reviews.Watched a action movie on the flight and the sound came close to surround sound, which was a surprise.
Comfort was not great at the start. But since the headband is made of wire I just bent it so it was wider. I then wore for my entire flight to London with no discomfort. You do want to be careful in bending the wire so it doesn't get to wide. It's easier to bend out versus bending back. My wife said hers' were comfortable just the way they were.
Noise canceling was awesome! One of my flights had a crying baby and with the headphones on, it was like what baby. So much noise gets blocked that I could not imagine flying without them. One of my friends said he uses them(same brand) to watch movies at home when the kids are being loud. My friend initially told me about the Phillips.
Do they have problems? Sure, but you can customize the fit. The on/off switch is a little bit of a pain. Even there I just turn it on before
I put them on. If my wife wanted to talk to me I just lifted the ear piece. That doesn't mean that the quality is bad. The durability seems ok to me, but the test of time is what will tell. My kids will use them to watch movies while driving(another durability test. They block out road noise great.
Sometimes I think people are just to inflexible instead of being picky.
